The government has announced that it will designate UK data centres as critical national infrastructure as part of efforts to protect them from cyber attacks and IT service disruptions.

These buildings store a lot of data generated in the UK, including photos taken on smartphones, financial information and NHS records.

Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) classification puts data centers on the same level as water, energy, and emergency services systems, and provides them with greater support from the government to anticipate and recover from negative events such as cyberattacks, power outages, and environmental disasters.

The government said it had received the CNI designation for the first time in a decade, which it said would help protect critical data infrastructure and help businesses drive economic growth in an increasingly digital world.

The data centre industry is estimated to generate around $4.6 billion in revenue annually, and the UK has the largest number of data centres in Western Europe.

Technology Minister Peter Kyle said: Data centres are the engines of modern life. They power the digital economy and keep our most personal information safe.

Incorporating data centers into the critical national infrastructure system will allow for better coordination and cooperation with governments to protect against cybercriminals and unexpected events.

The government has also welcomed a proposal by data company DC01UK to invest £3.75 billion to build Europe’s largest data centre in Hertfordshire, which it says will create more than 700 jobs locally and support thousands more across the country.

Kyle said: The significant private investment of $3.75 billion announced in Hertfordshire today is a vote of confidence in the plan and a clear example of my determination to ensure that technological advancements help grow our economy and create wealth across the country.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) also announced this week that it plans to invest $8 billion over the next five years to build, operate and maintain data centers in the UK. AWS is one of the world’s largest data center providers.
