Election Dysfunction Live: Gove Reveals How He Knew Sunak Was Calling Early Election

The first live show of Sky's Election Dysfunction podcast takes place tonight in London, with former Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove as the first guest alongside Beth Rigby, Ruth Davidson and Harriet Harman.

The Conservative heavyweight lost his seat in Surrey Heath in the general election (now won by the Lib Dems), allowing him to speak more freely than at any time in 19 years.

Our political editor Beth Rigby asked him about Election Day, and he spilled the beans.

He said on the podcast that “rumors were growing” the day before the election.

“Various meetings were cancelled. It was hard to believe that it was because they were about to hold a general election. There were also suggestions that another reorganization was in the works.”

But Mr Gove continued: “I didn't know for sure, but when I got the call at lunchtime asking me to come and see Rishi, I was 99 per cent sure I knew. [Sunak] “The cabinet meeting is scheduled to be held at 3:45 p.m., rather than 4:15 p.m.

At that moment he knew that “the rumors that had been circulating all day were almost certainly true.”

He revealed that the Cabinet meeting was attended by then Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt, then Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden, then Scottish First Minister Alistair Jack and then Defence Secretary Grant Shapps.

When asked about his views on holding early elections, Mr Gove made a telling comparison.

He said, “If your friend tells you that they're getting married, and you think, 'Oh my goodness, it's not him or her,' and then your friend says, 'I've already made reservations at the church. Be my best man or maid of honor,' then you have to smile and hope for the best and trust that it will work out.”

Grant Shappsman said it wasn't a good idea, but he did so in a “very polite, very restrained way”.

There was growing unease at key cabinet meetings, with the then sensible minister Esther McVie and Northern Ireland First Minister Chris Heaton-Harris saying this was not a good idea.

“The problem is, looking back now, no matter when the election is held, some of us will lose our seats, many of us will lose our seats.

“And Grant [Shapps] Grant will rise again.”
