Ukrainian drone attacks Russian ammunition depot in Toropets and Tver

A Ukrainian drone attack on a Russian missile facility early Wednesday morning unleashed towering fireballs visible from space and loud explosions that set off seismic monitors.

Officials on both sides said the incident was the result of a large Ukrainian drone attack on Toropets, a town in the Tver region about 230 miles from the Russian capital. Russian state media had earlier reported that the military was building an arsenal to store missiles and other explosives there.

Speaking to reporters early Wednesday morning, Tver Governor Igor Rodinia said all drones in the area had been shot down and a fire had broken out on the ground as a result of the wreckage of a downed drone. Loud explosions could be heard in the background as he spoke.

Rodinia said he had ordered a partial evacuation of the surrounding area, and state media reported that schools and kindergartens were closed while firefighters worked to put out the blazes.

He later announced that people could return to their homes and said all facilities in the area were working. Russian news agencies, citing the region's health ministry, reported that 13 people were taken to hospital in moderate condition as a result of the accident.

The fires were so intense that NASA satellites captured them, while the Norwegian monitoring agency NORSAR recorded the explosion as a 3.2 magnitude earthquake.

A source in the Ukrainian Security Service confirmed to NBC News that its drones “wiped out a large warehouse of the Russian military’s Main Missile and Artillery Division.” The source, who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the operations, said Iskander, Tochka and KAB missiles were stored there.

She said the attack was part of Ukraine's attempt to “systematically reduce the enemy's missile potential, which it uses to destroy Ukrainian cities.”

The geolocated footage released by Reuters is consistent with the detonation of between 200 and 240 tons of high explosives, George William Herbert, who teaches at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California, told AFP.

Russian air defence systems destroyed about 54 drones launched overnight against five regions in western Russia, state news agencies reported, citing a report by the defence ministry in Moscow.

Since its invasion in February 2024, Russia has fired missiles into Ukraine, destroying sites such as schools, hospitals and residential buildings, while insisting that it does not target civilians.

Kyiv has been carrying out drone attacks on what it says are military targets on Russian territory. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is pressing the United States and other allies to lift restrictions that prevent him from using powerful, long-range Western weapons to strike deep inside Russia.
