Russia's ability to wage war – and repel Ukrainian forces occupying Kursk – has been severely damaged by a drone attack on a strategically important ammunition depot, a British Ministry of Defence bulletin has said.

The UK Ministry of Defence's X page highlighted the strike, which took place on Tuesday night and involved a successful one-way attack (OWA) using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

The Toropets base is located in the Tver region, about 300 miles from the Ukrainian border.

“This warehouse is a storage site for the 107th arsenal of the Russian Main Missile and Artillery Directorate, and almost certainly contains ammunition of various calibers for use on the front lines, as well as missiles and glide bombs used by nearby airfields,” the Defense Ministry said.

“According to reports, ammunition imported from North Korea was also stored here.”

The Defense Ministry statement added that this warehouse, which was renovated in 2018, is one of the largest strategic ammunition depots in Russia and directly supports its operations in Ukraine, storing more than 30,000 tons of ammunition.

The report explained: “The recent improvements to the site were prompted by previous poor storage of old explosive materials, which led to a series of explosions at several warehouses. One such explosion in June 2011 in Pugachevo, Udmurtia, damaged 3,000 homes and forced the evacuation of 30,000 people.

“The explosion in Toropets was recorded at 2.7 on the Richter scale, equivalent to a mild earthquake, with fires covering an area 6 kilometers wide.”

The MoD concluded: “It is highly likely that poor storage of munitions, which left them vulnerable to drones, caused a series of cascading explosions within the bunker system, resulting in massive munition losses.

“Russian air defenses are still struggling to counter Ukrainian deep strike operations, despite claiming to have intercepted more than 50 drones in this attack.

Although this loss forms part of a broad supply network, it is highly likely to disrupt Russian ground operations, especially in the Kursk region.

Russian authorities on Saturday temporarily closed a 62-mile stretch of highway and evacuated passengers from a nearby railway station after the attack. The road reopened a few hours later.

Unconfirmed images circulating on Telegram showed a large ball of flame rising into the night sky and dozens of smoke trails from the explosions.

Ukraine launched more than 100 drones into Russia and occupied Crimea overnight, Russian news reports and the defense ministry said Saturday.
