North Korean leader Kim Jong-un expressed his intention to develop friendly relations with Beijing in his reply letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korean state media reported Sunday.
Kim sent the letter on September 15, six days after Xi congratulated North Korea on its 76th founding anniversary, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported.
“It is the common desire of the people of the two countries to consolidate and steadily develop the DPRK-China friendship based on a long historical tradition,” Kim wrote in the letter.
DPRK refers to the official name of North Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
In his message, Kim wished the Chinese people success in their efforts to build “a modern socialist country” under the leadership of Xi Jinping, as this year marks the 75th anniversary of China's founding.
The exchange of letters comes at a time when relations between North Korea and its longtime ally China have become relatively estranged, in contrast to Pyongyang's growing military and economic cooperation with Moscow amid the ongoing war in Ukraine. (Yonhap)
