Pine Nuts: Rocks R Us

Yesterday, a good friend invited me to join the Stanford Club for a five-mile hike to Galena Falls, led by geologist emeritus Dave. I have always loved rocks, ever since I heard one of my geologist uncles pointing me out at age eight assure my aunt, “That boy has rocks in his head.”

However, I discovered a new appreciation for rocks while hiking, as Dave explained their contents, virtue, and beauty. But at one point, I tripped over a goblin that I mistook for a half-goblin. I was also alarmed to learn that an active earthquake fault runs directly under my bed. I might get a call from Mother Earth tonight and end up on the ground. I also decided to give a wide berth to every volcano I saw, no matter how old it was, according to Dave or the Stanford graduate next to me.

A member of our group asked Dave how old Lake Tahoe was, and I couldn't help but answer because I knew the answer to the year. Dave looked a little perturbed when I explained, “Lake Tahoe is three million years old.”

There was a silence before Dave asked, “So, sir, how do you know that Lake Tahoe is three million and three years old?”

“Well, you see, an old-timer from Washoe told me that Tahoe was three million years old, and that was three years ago.”

Dave gave me a complacent smile before kicking the dirt (grainy granite) with his boot. I wanted to take the lead of the lap at that point, but Dave held on

One of our members was wearing a T-shirt that had “DEAD SEA” written across her chest, and I couldn’t help but whisper to her, “I was there when the Dead Sea was just sick.”

She looked at me like I asked her to borrow five dollars, and stuck her tongue out at me…

I guess it didn't help that I was wearing a T-shirt that emblazoned a 1982 Cal football victory over Stanford away with “The Play” diagrammed across my chest, involving six fullbacks for a touchdown that knocked over half the Stanford huddle waiting in the end zone to celebrate Stanford's seemingly certain victory.

Well, these Stanford grads started looking at me like I had tested positive for Covid, but then when I asked one lady for a cookie and saw she had two, she gave me both. So I really like these Stanford grads, even though by the end of Dave’s fascinating tour I found myself biting my nails in anticipation of an imminent earthquake or lava flow, and vowing to go to confession the following Sunday.
