Tsunami hits Japanese islands after 5.9 magnitude quake, residents on alert

A small tsunami has hit Japan after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean on Tuesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said tsunami waves as high as 50 centimeters hit Hachijo Island, one of the Izu Islands, about 40 minutes after the quake struck.

The agency added that smaller tsunami waves were monitored on three other islands, namely Kozushima, Miyakejima and Izu Oshima as well.

No casualties have been reported from the tsunami or earthquake so far.

The agency also issued a tsunami warning of about 1 metre (3.3 feet) in height for Izu and Ogasawara islands.

About 21,500 people live on the islands in the Izu group and about 2,500 people on the Ogasawara Islands, the Associated Press reported.

Meanwhile, unprecedented torrential rains hit the Noto region of central Japan on Saturday, killing at least one person and leaving more than seven missing.

Hourly rainfall in Wajima hit a record 121 mm (4.8 inches) on Saturday morning, while nearby Suzu city recorded 84.5 mm per hour, also an all-time high.

A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale struck Suzu, Wajima and surrounding areas in Japan in January this year, killing more than 300 people.

Japan lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a line of seismic faults in the Pacific Ocean, and is one of the world's most earthquake and tsunami-prone countries.
