War in Lebanon: tens of thousands of people have fled to the north, 492 dead in Israeli airstrikes BBC News

Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 492 people in a single day in Lebanon, according to officials there, as the conflict escalated into full-scale war. More than 1,600 people were reported injured. Tens of thousands of people in southern Lebanon fled their homes and headed north along the main road to the capital Beirut in the face of the Israeli attack. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said the goal is to shift the “security balance” along its northern border. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia has been firing rockets across the border into Israel since the October 7 Hamas attack that sparked the Gaza war. He said the Israel Defense Forces hit more than 1,300 Hezbollah targets in 24 hours. Hezbollah was reported to have fired 35 rockets into Israel, and no casualties were reported. The conflict in Lebanon has escalated significantly in recent days after the pageants and radio phones exploded, killing and injuring many members of Hezbollah. Israel has not claimed responsibility, but is believed to have been behind the attacks.
