In the eighth episode of Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story on Netflix, titled Seismic Shifts, we see multiple earthquakes hit the courtroom as the brothers face trial. From the trailer, it seemed like people in the area were very scared of what was happening, and felt a lot of aftershocks after the main event.

A lot of things were made up in Ryan Murphy's adaptation for dramatic effect, and the show's creator has already been called out by Erik Menendez himself for the “blatant lies” he told in the series, with people also noting a major inaccuracy in the Jose and Kitty death scene.

However, the addition of the earthquake during the trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez was based on a true story, and not just added for us to watch at home. So, here's what really happened and how serious the natural event was.

In 1994, an earthquake struck the San Fernando Valley, California, during the trial of Lyle and Erik Menendez. At the time, people feared that the earthquake would affect the trial proceedings, but everything went well.

The real earthquake was called the 1994 Northridge earthquake, and it struck in California at about 4:30 a.m. on January 17, lasting about eight seconds. It was reportedly the strongest quake in the area since 1971, measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale.

As in the Netflix series, the brothers were in their cells when the first earthquake struck, and attorney Leslie Abramson called the prison to make sure her clients were safe. During the earthquake, Lyle reportedly fell out of his prison bed and injured his arm.

According to journalist Robert Rand's book about the brothers, after the earthquake, Lyle and Erik Menendez were locked in their cells for three days due to a lack of prison staff. Public transportation and roads suffered in the aftermath of the earthquake, so people had difficulty getting to work.

As a result of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, 57 people died and more than 9,000 were injured, including 1,600 who required hospitalization. Additionally, property damage was estimated at between $13 billion and $50 billion, making it among the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

Seismographs recorded 3,000 aftershocks greater than 1.5 magnitude in the three weeks following the main quake, and damage was recorded up to 85 miles from the epicenter.

The earthquake has become so famous now that it has appeared in numerous other references in popular culture. It was the subject of the 1995 film Epicenter U, and was part of the plot of the 2004 film A Cinderella Story. In the film, Hilary Duff's character Sam lives in the San Fernando Valley with her father, stepmother, and two half-sisters. Her father, Hal, dies in the earthquake while trying to save her stepmother.
