On the night of September 8, 2023, a massive 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Morocco, killing families in their beds and destroying entire villages. Just 19 minutes later, a powerful aftershock shook survivors. In the hours and days that followed, hundreds more tremors struck across the country, from Marrakesh to Casablanca.

People searched for loved ones in the rubble of destroyed homes. In many isolated mountain communities in the High Atlas Mountains, the epicenter of the disaster, they faced an agonizing wait for help as blocked roads, long distances and landslides hampered rescue and relief efforts. In villages, towns and cities across the region, terrified and traumatized families spent nights sleeping in the open, too afraid to seek shelter.

The Al Hoceima earthquake was the deadliest to hit Morocco since the 1960s and the most powerful in the country's history, leaving shattered communities facing a long and difficult road to recovery.

Our immediate response

Within hours of the disaster, Islamic Relief launched an appeal to raise £10 million to help survivors. As our wonderful family of supporters around the world mobilised to help, we sent an emergency team to Morocco to support relief efforts and assess how best to help survivors. Within days, we were distributing much-needed survival kits, working with our local partners, Al-Mubadara and Al-Tawasul.

Over the next 12 weeks, we distributed 2,600 mattresses, more than 3,400 blankets and warm clothing to help people exposed to harsh winter weather. More than 2,400 hygiene kits we provided helped combat the spread of waterborne diseases. By the end of December, we had supported more than 7,500 people, and in one year we had reached more than 65,000 people.
