Women's Tennis Hosts Wildcat Invitational This Weekend
ABILENE – The ACU women's tennis team welcomes seven other programs to the Wildcat Invitational Friday through Sunday at the John TL Jones Tennis Complex.
Players from ACU, Texas Tech, SMU, UTSA, Texas State, UTEP, New Mexico State and Tarleton will comprise a field of 45 singles players and approximately 20 doubles teams for the tournament.
“I feel like we have a more complete team now, we just need to get it together,” said the head coach Bryan Rainwater“We will know much more after this weekend.”
The Wildcats are comprised of two seniors, five juniors and one freshman. The team spent last weekend in Las Cruces, New Mexico, at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by New Mexico State.
“There were real bright spots with Masha Vrsalovic And Olivia Sears. In the past we were very solid in 3 through 6, but not so much in 1 and 2. They both won most of their games,” Rainwater said.
“I feel like this is one of the deepest teams we've ever had. Our two transfers, Angela Del Campo And Alice Klintebywill slide in for Maryjoe Crisologo And Andrea Guerrero [who graduated]. Angela can play in the top 3 of the line-up, and Alice is going to be huge for us in the 5 or 6 range.”
The opportunity to play a home tournament is obviously beneficial for the ACU players, as they don't have to disrupt their routine, but it is also good for the team.
“I think for us, hosting the teams that we do helps grow our program. It puts our girls in the spotlight with better players, and it brings in other teams that might want to come in the spring.”
The Wildcat Invitational begins each day with singles matches at 9:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 12:00 p.m. Doubles matches are expected to begin at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free.
