Elon Musk is left out of Britain's top investment summit

During the August riots, Musk shared — and later deleted — a conspiracy theory on his social media platform X that Britain was building camps on the Falkland Islands to detain rioters.

At the time, ministers said his comments were “completely unjustifiable” and “highly reprehensible”.

The BBC understands this is why he was not invited to the event on October 14, along with hundreds of the world's biggest investors.

Two weeks before the budget announcement, the government is promoting it as a huge opportunity to attract foreign investment to help the UK economy grow. Labour has promised to hold the event within 100 days of taking office, before the general election.

Under the Conservative government, Musk, owner or operator of Tesla, SpaceX and Tesla Inc., has quietly toured a number of UK sites with potential for gigafactories for cars and batteries.

He previously told reporters that he opened the site in Germany rather than the UK because of Brexit.

He is a regular at the equivalent French summit. In July, he attended a three-hour lunch with top executives alongside President Emmanuel Macron ahead of this summer's Olympics.

Mr Musk, who owns the site formerly known as Twitter, has lifted bans on far-right figures, including the Britain First group.

The UK is considering stronger online safety laws after widespread racist misinformation in August.
