Imran Khan backs Justice Mansoor Ali Shah for Chief Justice post

Imran Khan, the jailed founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has expressed his party's full support for Supreme Court Justice Mansoor Ali Shah to become the next Chief Justice of Pakistan. Speaking informally to reporters from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Wednesday, Khan called for an early announcement of the appointment of the next Chief Justice, stressing PTI's support for Justice Shah.

Khan, who was impeached by a parliamentary vote in April 2022, has criticized the government, saying its aim was to undermine the judiciary by limiting the authority of the chief justice. He accused the ruling coalition of trying to install judges who would facilitate electoral fraud in the upcoming 2024 elections, saying the government was determined to suppress the PTI at all costs.

His remarks come amid controversy over a constitutional bill proposed by the ruling coalition. The bill would include provisions to increase the retirement age of high court and Supreme Court judges, and could involve extending the term of the current chief justice, Qazi Faez Isa, who is due to retire in October.

While the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its allies, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), claim to have the necessary votes for the constitutional amendments, the process has been delayed. The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), led by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, has so far refused to support the amendments, leaving the government without the required two-thirds majority in the National Assembly and the Senate.

In the National Assembly, the coalition needs 224 votes, but currently holds 211, while in the Senate it needs 64. Despite the JUI-F's reluctance, PML-N leader and political and public affairs adviser Rana Sanaullah has suggested that it would be possible to reach a “minimum consensus” among political parties on the constitutional amendments focusing on the judiciary, which include the creation of a constitutional court. PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has reiterated that these amendments would be introduced regardless of the opposition.

Sanaullah also noted that consultations with political parties are underway, with the PPP and JUI-F working on draft amendments, which will be discussed in the upcoming sessions after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif returns from the US. He expressed hope that the constitutional package would be presented after reaching a consensus among the parties.
