Boris Johnson thought he might have left him in intensive care
Mr Johnson spent several days in intensive care with Covid in April 2020. In the extract from his book Unleashed published in the Daily Mail, he described not wanting to go to sleep on his first night in intensive care, in part in case I never wake up.
He also remembers feeling consumed by guilt and political embarrassment in the days before he was admitted to the hospital.
The nurses who treated Mr Johnson on his first night in intensive care were Jenny from New Zealand and Luis from Portugal, he recalled.
After his release from hospital, the then Prime Minister spent time at Checkers with his now-wife Carrie, and he remembers joining in the clap for the NHS on a Thursday evening.
I clapped with deep emotion because my lungs were telling me that I had experienced something truly horrible, and that if it hadn't been for Jenny and Luis, who handled those oxygen tubes all night with all their skill and experience, I think I could do it. I parked it, he wrote.
Upon admission to the ICU, Mr. Johnson said he started to doze off, but didn't want to sleep partway in case I never woke up, or in case they decided to do a tracheotomy stealthily without letting me know.
He also described the days leading up to his admission to the hospital.
There were several days between Mr Johnson's announcement of his positive Covid test in late March 2020 and his hospitalization in early April, and he described himself as feeling so rotten.
It wasn't just physical distress; it was the guilt, the political embarrassment of it all, he said.
I needed to be there, leading the country from the front, sorting PPE, repairing nursing homes, leading the quest for a cure.
