San Diego County searches for rabies-infected bat victim found inside safari park – NBC 7 San Diego
County public health officials were searching Saturday for people who may have come into contact with an exotic bat discovered at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park nearly a week ago.
The wild bat, which tested positive for rabies and later died at a rehabilitation facility, was recovered by employees at the park's Africa Tram area around 2:15 p.m. on Sept. 23, according to the San Diego County Communications Department. .
The county public health laboratory confirmed that the bat was infected with rabies. Officials are asking anyone who was in the area of Africa Tram on Sept. 23 and had direct contact with a bat before 2:15 p.m. to contact the county public health department as soon as possible.
“There is no risk of rabies to park visitors who had no physical contact with the bats,” officials said.
“Rabies in humans is usually fatal unless vaccination and treatment are provided promptly after exposure,” said Dr. Ankita Kadakia, San Diego County Public Health Officer. “Rabies can be transmitted if you are bitten by a bat or if bat saliva comes into contact with cuts, scrapes, or mucous membranes such as the eyes, nose, or mouth.”
The county announced that officials discovered five rabid bats throughout the San Diego area in 2024. Many species of bats that eat mosquitoes and other insects have been found in San Diego County. Other bat species feed on the nectar of plants, pollinating them in the process.
County officials advised anyone who comes into contact with a bat to wash the affected area thoroughly with soap and water and seek immediate medical attention.
Rabies is a preventable viral disease that is most often transmitted through the bite of a rabid animal. In humans, symptoms may take weeks to months to develop. Rabies is usually fatal once symptoms develop, but the disease can be prevented with prompt post-exposure treatment after exposure to the virus, officials said.
