UK weather: Met Office issues new heavy rain warning | uk news

Weather warnings have been issued for heavy rain, with some areas already saturated with early downpours.

According to the Met Office, some areas on Monday received more rainfall than their monthly average, with some counties in southern and central England already receiving more than 250% of their average September rainfall.

An amber warning for wind and rain was issued on Sunday, with two new amber warnings for heavy rain next week.

Sunday's warning for further heavy rain, which could lead to travel delays and flooding, applies to most of southern England and South Wales between 4pm on Sunday and 9am on Monday.

Rainfall of 20mm to 30mm could be seen over a 9-12 hour period, with some areas in the higher elevations possibly reaching up to 80mm.

The Environment Agency issued 33 flood warnings across England on Sunday afternoon, indicating flooding is expected, and 67 warnings where flooding is possible.

Environment Agency flood risk manager Mark Garratt said rain expected on Sunday and Monday would cause surface water flooding in many parts of south-west and southern England, threatening to spread into the Midlands, with flooding expected in some areas on Monday. . “It's especially important that people don't drive through floods. Floods are often deeper than they appear and just 30cm of flowing water can float a car,” he said.

“Across the country, Environment Agency teams are inspecting flood defenses, clearing debris from storm drains and supporting local authorities to respond to surface water flooding.

A yellow warning for winds has been issued across south-west England and Wales from 9am on Sunday until the end of the day.

Wind gusts between 50 and 60 mph were possible, creating large waves, downing trees, disrupting travel and knocking out some power.

Fresh rain warning issued

The rain warning applies to eastern England from 8am on Monday until 3am on Tuesday, and in North Wales and north-west England from 12.30am to 8pm on Monday.

Both predict widespread rainfall of between 20mm and 40mm, with 60mm possible in parts of North Wales and north-west England, and between 60mm and 80mm possible in parts of eastern England.

Met Office meteorologist Liam Eslick said he was expecting “very persistent heavy rain” across North Wales and north-west England.

The highest rainfall will fall in the highlands of eastern England. Areas including Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire will see less rainfall but are already saturated due to recent heavy rainfall.

It comes after heavy rain and localized flooding across the UK in recent days, causing widespread disruption to road and rail services for commuters.

Around 650 properties are estimated to have been flooded in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire and the Home Counties, with around 8,200 properties protected, according to the Environment Department.

Higher pressure will move in Tuesday night, which means drier and sunnier times, Eslick said.

“Tuesday night into Wednesday we'll start to see a lot more dry weather and a lot of sunny weather as the pressure starts to rise higher,” he said.

“However, we do see additional low pressure moving in next weekend, but we are still keeping an eye on that.”
