Supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan injured in clashes with police in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD

Dozens of supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan were injured in clashes with police in the garrison town of Rawalpindi near the national capital Islamabad on Saturday.

Clashes broke out after members of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and his supporters gathered in Rawalpindi to protest and demand the immediate release of their leader from prison.

“We are holding a peaceful protest but the police are using force against us to disperse our workers,” PTI Islamabad President Aamir told reporters.

Dozens of PTI workers were arrested and many injured by police tear gas, he added.

Protesters wearing tricolor caps and waving party flags chanted: “Long live Imran Khan”, “Free Imran Khan” and “Unacceptable rigged elections”.

Videos posted on social media showed enraged activists throwing stones at riot police, who in turn threw tear gas shells to disperse the protesters.

The PTI announced that it would hold a peaceful protest in Rawalpindi after the government delayed its tactics to get permission to hold a rally at Liaqat Bagh on September 28.

Clashes broke out between the charged protesters and police before the arrival of the chief minister of the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who was leading a rally to take part in the demonstration.

“The vehicle of PTI Acting Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan, Barrister General Secretary Salman Akram Raja and others was stopped by the police in Islamabad, which is a cowardly act on the part of the fascist government currently supported by the army”, wrote the PTI on X.

Punjab provincial government spokesperson Azma Bokhari, however, accused the PTI of organizing a protest to destabilize law and order in the city.

“The chief minister of a terrorism-hit province is coming to invade Punjab with private forces with cranes, ambulances and government jammers,” she said on X.

The PTI also organized two massive rallies in Islamabad and Lahore in September to demand Khan's immediate release from prison.

Khan, 72, is currently languishing in a prison in Rawalpindi. He is seeking bail in several cases ranging from corruption to terrorism. He denies the accusations.

The courts have already overturned two of his

convictions and suspended a third.

The former cricket star was ousted in a vote of no confidence in April 2022.
