Catholic Gymkhana Elects New Leadership as It Embraces Modernity | Mumbai News
MUMBAI: The Catholic Gymkhana Ltd. based in Marine Drive, a sporting and cultural club for over 100 years, held its annual governing committee elections on Saturday evening. At this event, lawyer Joaquim Reis was re-elected unopposed as president, while Clyde Crasto, the national spokesperson of the Nationalist Congress Party Sharadchandra Pawar, was elected vice president.
Crasto told HT that eleven members had applied for the board, seven of which were from their panel.
The gymkhana was founded in 1912 during the British era and became renowned for its sporting excellence, including football, hockey, billiards, cricket, badminton and tennis. However, Crasto says it is more than just a sports facility. It also represents a unique mix of culture, sports and entertainment.
The Gymkhana, which has 3,000 life members, is also moving into the digital age by adopting cashless transactions via QR codes, reflecting its commitment to blending tradition with modernization. It caters mainly to the Catholic community, but is open to everyone and offers a variety of recreational and cultural activities. We have a badminton court, table tennis and multi-sport activities. On Saturdays we organize dance evenings for our members. It's a mix of sporting and cultural events, making it a vibrant community center, Crasto added.
Membership in the Gymkhana involves a notable distinction between Catholics and non-Catholics. Catholics pay 2 lakh for lifetime membership, while non-Catholics pay 5 lakhs. There is a difference in fees because we are predominantly a Catholic institution, but were open to everyone. We have members from different communities and we organize cultural events like dandiya during Navratri, Goan and Mangalorean festivals, Crasto said, adding that it is a Catholic institution with a secular mindset.
The Gymkhana is home to three restaurants, Palms, Gym Diner and Sports Diner, which offer multi-cuisine options. Other facilities include a snooker and billiards room, a full-sized badminton court and the recently introduced pickleball on the terrace. The extensive lawn is used for cricket and football, while the hall hosts weddings and social events. The well-appointed bar, Sussegado, is also a popular feature.
Crasto, who had served three terms as additional vice president in a nominated role, expressed his gratitude after being elected. “I was honored to be chosen by the executive committee this time,” he said.
