UK flu vaccinations fall, warning ahead of winter

Vaccination of 2- and 3-year-olds provided protection in more than 4 in 10 children.

This follows concerns from NHS England about the possibility of a 'trifecta' of people other than flu, Covid and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Although people can get these common viruses all year round, the flu is especially common in the winter.

Most people fully recover from influenza, but it can be serious and even fatal.

Some years are worse for flu infections and deaths than others. In the 2017-2018 season, there were 22,500 excess deaths due to flu.

It's unclear how bad this year will be.

Northern hemisphere countries like the UK are looking to southern hemisphere countries like Australia to predict what will happen next.

Australia's winter flu season looks set to end and data shows cases are relatively high, similar to recent years.

Some countries in southern Africa and South America (Chile, Ecuador, and Uruguay) also had high rates of influenza.

Because of the constantly evolving nature of the influenza virus, the vaccine is regularly updated to ensure it is the best available.

The free NHS flu vaccine is available to:

65 years or older

If you have certain long-term health problems

pregnant

live in a nursing home

A person who is the primary carer of an elderly or disabled person or who receives carer's allowance

Living with people with weak immune systems

Some people may have already received an invitation, and most eligible adults will be able to get a flu vaccine starting October 3.

Children are given a nasal spray flu vaccine.

People can get the flu vaccine at the same time as other vaccines, such as those against Covid or shingles.

It is usually not given at the same time as the RSV vaccine, but may be given together if your doctor or nurse determines it is necessary.

Dr Gayatri Amirthalingam, UKHSA Deputy Director for Immunization, said: “As winter approaches, we see many dangerous viruses circulating in our communities, including flu, which can tragically kill thousands of people every year. Getting vaccinated before winter is by far your best defense.

You are at higher risk for serious illness if you are pregnant or have certain long-term health problems. Older adults and young infants with the flu are also much more likely to be hospitalized.

So if you or your child is receiving the flu, Covid or RSV vaccine, don't delay in getting it. If you have any concerns, please ask your nurse or doctor.”

People eligible to receive the autumn Covid booster include those in clinical risk groups, including adults aged 65 and over, care home residents and staff, frontline health and social care workers and pregnant women.
