Xi honors fallen heroes on Martyrs' Day; activities organized across the country to mark this day
Chinese President Xi Jinping and other Party and state leaders attended a ceremony to hand over flower baskets to fallen heroes at Tian'anmen Square in central Beijing on Monday.
The event was held to commemorate Chinese Martyrs' Day, which falls every year on September 30, one day before China's National Day.
Representatives from all walks of life and relatives of fallen heroes, as well as young Chinese pioneers, offered flower baskets and bouquets in front of the People's Heroes Monument, in tribute to the martyrs.
China's top legislature approved September 30 as Martyrs' Day in 2014 to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives for national independence and prosperity.
Also on Monday, several cities in China held various commemorative activities to commemorate the martyrs, with many people visiting war memorial museums to lay bouquets and pay their respects.
In recent days, several public security organs in Hubei, Guangdong, Shanghai and other regions of China have held commemorative activities in local martyrs' memorial parks, inspiring participants to inherit and carry on the spirit of heroes of the new era.
According to cpd.com, affiliated with the Ministry of Public Security, the police are the most sacrificed group in peacetime. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, more than 17,000 police officers have died in the line of duty, and more than 3,700 have been honored as martyrs.

Some Taiwanese compatriots also laid flowers for the fallen heroes at the Unknown Heroes Memorial Square in Beijing's Xishan National Forest Park on Sunday.
To commemorate Martyrs' Day, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs and the National Post Office jointly designed and issued commemorative stamps, with the Monument to the People's Heroes as the main image.
China has a long tradition of remembering and honoring martyrs and other heroes who made great contributions to the nation's development. Incomplete statistics suggest that China has around 20 million martyrs. However, because many of them did not leave their names during wartime, only about 1.96 million martyrs were listed in the government directory, according to public information.
The country has around one million burial sites dedicated to martyrs. According to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs, about 150,000 martyrs' memorial facilities and more than 730,000 martyrs' burial sites have been registered in the information system, and 250,000 martyrs' graves and memorial sites have been repaired, according to media reports in September.
