House Majority Whip Tom Emmer said he researched Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, whom he says he has known for 20 years, to play the character accurately to help prepare for Sen. J.D. Vance for Tuesday's vice presidential debate.

I've known Tim, oh, probably since he was first elected almost 20 years ago. And I worked directly with him for four years, Emmer, a Minnesota Republican, told ABC's Martha Raddatz. I've spent the last month going through all his old stuff to note his phrases, his mannerisms, that sort of thing.

The two men worked together in the House of Representatives from 2015, when Emmer was first sworn in, to 2019, when Walz was sworn in as governor.

Emmer called Walz a total disaster in Minnesota and said that while the Democratic governor served in Congress, he played that character for several years while being quite popular, [agriculture] friendly, outdoor enthusiast.

He's not well-liked because once you know the real Tim Walz, he's like Gavin Newsom in a flannel shirt, Emmer said of Walz, who won his 2022 gubernatorial race in Minnesota by more than 7 points.

Emmer wouldn't go into detail about Vance's debate preparation, but said Donald Trump's vice presidential nominee would do a great job, adding that once he understands Tim Walz will just try to deviate and jump into this popular story, he will hold him responsible.
