Notes on State Tennis #1 Singles Champion
The 2024 preliminary tennis season ended in Gillette and there were more than a few bright moments. In the #1 girls singles state championship match, Cheyenne Central's Hailey Mathis-Breitkopf rolled to a 6-0 6-0 victory over Jackson's Carolina Brokaw. She didn't lose a single match during the regular season and didn't lose a set at the State Tournament. Mathis-Breitkopf is used to winning, as she was the reigning No. 2 state singles champion the past two years.
On the boys side, Paulo Mellizo of Laramie took second place at last year's State Tournament in #1 Singles. He lost to Cheyenne South's Andrew Locke and he was tough to beat.
Mellizo had to work hard for his 2024 state championship in #1 Singles, taking care of Colin Crecelius of Cheyenne East 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. That second set was the only set he lost in the state tournament and that was enough motivation for the rest of the championship match.
We spoke with Mathis-Breitkopf and Mellizo at Campbell County High School on Saturday and they were certainly happy and relieved at the same time.
