US approves $567 million in military support for Taiwan | Military news

This support is the latest measure taken by Washington to strengthen the army of the autonomous islands in the face of growing tensions with China.

US President Joe Biden has approved $567 million in new defense support for Taiwan, the White House announced.

In a brief statement Sunday, the White House said Biden had delegated to the secretary of state to direct the withdrawal of up to $567 million in defense articles and services from the Department of Defense, as well as 'in military education and training, in order to provide assistance to Taiwan.

He provided no further details.

Although the United States does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, it is Taipei's main international donor and arms supplier. China has repeatedly asked Washington to stop selling arms to Taipei, which it claims as its territory.

In April, the United States approved billions of dollars in military aid to Taiwan as China stepped up its military and political pressure on the island. Beijing accuses Washington of interfering in its internal affairs by supporting the democratic island.

Taipei has complained about delayed deliveries of US weapons, including modernized F-14 fighter jets.

China has not renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control and has also intensified its rhetoric about the inevitability of unification.

Taiwan rejects China's claims and says it is up to the island's residents to choose their future.
