Islamabad: A Pakistani court on Monday rejected bail applications of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the new Toshakhana case, where they face allegations of abuse of power to acquire state gifts.

Special judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand announced the verdict on the bail pleas filed by the couple during a hearing at Adiala jail, where the former first couple also appeared, Geo News reported.

The development comes as the duo is expected to be charged in the case on October 2 after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) was prevented from pursuing the case and the case was transferred to the Federal Investigation Agency ( FIA), in accordance with the decision of the Supreme Court. verdict reinstating amendments to anti-corruption laws.

Khan, 71, was arrested on August 5 last year after his conviction in the first Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Since then, he has been imprisoned in various cases.

The new Toshakhana case against the couple emerged after the NAB arrested them soon after a district and sessions court in Islamabad acquitted Khan and Bushra in the iddat case, also known as the business name for non-Islamic nikah.

During Monday's hearing, the FIA ​​prosecutor said the suspects received the Bulgari (Bvlgari) jewelry set from Saudi Arabia and informed the court that the agency had obtained the records from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a necklace and earrings.

“According to the files, the two objects are valued at Rs 71.5 million,” said the prosecutor, adding that the couple had it valued at Rs 5.8 million with a private company.

Asking the court to reject the couple's bail application, he said the suspects also failed to submit the said set of jewelry to the Toshakhana depot.

In accordance with the Toshakhana Rules, gifts/gifts and other similar materials received by persons to whom these rules apply must be reported to the Cabinet Division.

Representing Khan and Bushra, lawyer Salman Safdar said the new Toshakhana case was similar to the previous one with similar allegations and approvers.

Referring to the apex court's September 6 verdict reinstating the NAB amendments, the lawyer said Toshakhana's case against his clients should end after the top court's decision.

The court then reserved its verdict and announced it later after a break in the hearing.

The jewelry set comprising a ring, bracelet, necklace and a pair of earrings was gifted to the former first lady during her visit to Saudi Arabia in May 2021, according to the NAB case.

It says Khan and his wife illegally kept the jewelry set.

Despite getting relief in several cases, the PTI founder remains behind bars after being charged in the new Toshakhana case and other cases linked to the May 9 chaos.
