“I played tennis and squash in college, but I took up ping pong at Caltech about a decade ago because it requires quick reflexes and cunning. They fade more slowly with age than the skills needed for other sports. Now I'm 84 , and I are still crafty. The graduate students were great. They guided me, got me used to scoring 11 points and got me into tricky serves and spin.
I bought a table for the GPS division and put it on the roof of South Mudd. First the wheels came loose from the tiles, so I put the table on a rolling platform. Then the wind blew the table over, so I mounted it on the wall. The GPS administration let us play in the Salvatori Room, but we still only had one table and more than four players. So I sent out an invitation to everyone in the division, which quickly became a campus-wide announcement. That was early 2024. By the end of May we had registered more than 30 players for the Ping Pong Club.
The most enthusiastic person, and perhaps the best player, is [research support technician] John Truong of BBE. John keeps the ping-pong club going, even though we call it table tennis and play 11-point games, all in accordance with international rules.
