Judge rejects Imran, Bushra's bail request in new Toshakhana case – Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A judge on Monday rejected the bail plea after the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the fresh Toshakhana case.

The decision was announced by special judge Shahrukh Arjumand a day before the couple was charged in the case.

During the hearing, Mr. Khan's lawyer, Salman Safdar, argued that his clients had already been convicted in an identical case.

Therefore, he could not be tried twice in the same case, Mr. Safdar argued, while referring to the conviction of Mr. Khan and his wife earlier this year for withholding a set of jewelry received from a foreign dignitary.

After the Supreme Court's decision to uphold the amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance, this case should be withdrawn by the prosecuting agency, namely the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Safdar said.

The section officer was also informed that Mr Khan intended to keep the gift and declare it on his file.

In its reference, the anti-corruption watchdog further claimed that during his tenure as Prime Minister, Mr. Khan and his wife received a total of 108 gifts from different heads of state and foreign dignitaries.

Among these gifts, they allegedly retained 58 gifts for an undervalued amount of more than Rs142 million. Out of these 108 gifts, the accused kept 58 gift boxes/sets for an undervalued amount of Rs142.1 million as per the assessment of the assessors, the reference said. .
