Prime Minister says India is a trusted partner in Jamaica's development
India has been a trusted partner in Jamaica's development journey and stands ready to share its expertise in areas such as digital public infrastructure, biofuels, innovation and health with the nation, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, after speaking with his Jamaican counterpart Andrew Holness.
The Jamaican Prime Minister expressed his country's desire to strengthen cooperation with India in sectors such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, digitalization, security and energy . India is positioning itself as the knowledge capital of the world… We recognize the remarkable progress made by your government in STEM education and digitalization. We look forward to learning from India as a beacon of technological progress, Holness said.
Modi said he and Holness also discussed regional and global issues and agreed that all tensions and differences should be resolved through talks and both sides would continue to work towards ensuring global peace and security .
In the area of defence, Modi said they would make progress in training and capacity building of the Jamaican Armed Forces. The Prime Minister also identified organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism as common challenges facing the two countries.
Modi also announced that the road in front of the Jamaica High Commission in New Delhi has been named Jamaica Marg.
Prime Minister Modi further expressed optimism that relations between the two countries will grow faster than Usain Bolt. As a cricket-loving country, the sport plays a very important role in our relations. Indians have a special affection for cricketers. We also discussed deepening our cooperation in the sports field. “I am confident that the outcome of today's discussions will accelerate our relations even faster than Usain Bolt and we will continue to scale new heights,” PM Modi said.
Modi, praising the Indian community in Jamaica, said people of Indian origin who call Jamaica home are a living example of our cultural heritage.
The people who came to Jamaica from India about 180 years ago laid a strong foundation for our people-to-people ties. The approximately 70,000 people of Indian origin who call Jamaica home are a living example of our cultural heritage. I thank Prime Minister Holness and his government for taking care of them… The cultural exchange program taking place today will further strengthen our mutual ties, Modi said.
