Former President Trump tours Hurricane Helen damage in Valdosta

Former President Donald Trump landed in Valdosta Monday to tour storm damage. President Biden said he would visit damaged areas once it is safe to do so. Watch the story to learn more about Trump as he spoke to a crowd outside a Valdosta business.

Former President Donald Trump received his first glimpse of storm damage here from Helene.

The former president stopped by the Lowndes County Emergency Management Center to salute first responders who have worked around the clock to restore the city since last week's storm.

Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security reports that once Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm, the Biden-Harris administration partnered with FEMA to provide direct funding to prepare for impacts.

Valdosta suffered critical damage.

During his visit, Trump also stopped to see for himself the damage caused by Helene while meeting with a business owner whose business was destroyed by the storm.

As you know, our country is experiencing the last weeks of hotly contested national elections. But in a time like this, when a crisis hits. When our fellow citizens scream, none of that matters. We weren't talking about politics. We need to come together and solve this problem.

Although Vice President Kamala Harris has not yet announced her visit here, Harris said in a statement:
