Pittsburgh hockey coach accused of sexually abusing children in Iowa
WARRENDALE, Pa. (KDKA) – A Pittsburgh-area hockey coach is facing sex abuse charges against children in Iowa.
The charges against Kyle Dirks are detailed in court documents from Woodbury County, Iowa. According to investigators, Dirks, a goalkeeper coach, inappropriately touched two victims who were no older than 11 years old.
In the incidents, it was alleged that Dirks, who ran a hockey goalkeeping school and gave private lessons to players, took victims out to dinner and played video games in his home, where he allegedly touched the victims' genitals. The charges were filed on September 19.
The alleged incidents for both victims occurred between 2017 and 2021 and ended when Dirks moved to Cranberry.
In Pennsylvania, all youth coaches must obtain a child abuse waiver, a criminal history waiver from the Pennsylvania State Police, and a criminal history waiver from the FBI.
Dirks has coached for local college teams and conducted clinics at ice rinks including the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale and the Robert Morris University Island Sports Center.
A USA Hockey representative said that although Dirks is not a registered USA Hockey coach, the agency issued a suspension against Dirks and reported the 38-year-old to the US Center for SafeSport, a national clearinghouse used for background checks.
Dirks is free on bail. His next court appearance in Iowa is Oct. 10.
