The Pakistan Cricket Board's statement revealed that they had supported Babar Azam's captaincy
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) revealed that they had backed Babar Azam as their white-ball skipper following his resignation at midnight on October 2, 2024. Babar shared a long post on his social media accounts announcing his resignation as captain. of both limited overs formats and mentioned that he had already informed PCB of his decision in September.
In response, the PCB issued a statement Babar's resignation and accepted his decision. The board said he had their full support as white-ball skipper but respected his decision. The PCB also praised Babar for his professionalism and dedication to Pakistan Cricket.
“While the PCB had backed Babar Azam as white-ball captain, his decision to resign reflects his desire to focus more on making a bigger impact as a player. This decision is a testament to his professionalism and dedication to Pakistani cricket. He believes that if he dedicates himself fully to his batting, he will be able to play a more decisive role in the team's success in the shorter formats,” PCB said in a statement.
Babar was re-appointed as Pakistan's white-ball skipper earlier this year in March, following his earlier dismissal from all three formats in November 2023 in the wake of the disastrous 2023 ODI World Cup. Babar had replaced Shaheen as T20I skipper, while Shan Masood remained as Test skipper.
However, Babar's return as captain did not end well as Pakistan were eliminated from the 2024 T20 World Cup in the first leg itself after an embarrassing loss to the USA. He led Pakistan in 43 ODIs, winning 26 and losing 15 matches.
Pakistan's record as a T20I skipper
He led his team in three T20 World Cups in 2021, 2022 and 2024. Under his leadership, Pakistan reached the semi-finals of the tournament in 2021 and finished second in 2022, losing to England in the final. He finished as the most successful captain for his country in T20Is after leading the team in 85 matches and winning 48 of them.
In Tests, he captained Pakistan in twenty matches, winning ten matches and losing six. Meanwhile, the PCB selection committee will once again look for their new captaincy candidate in the limited overs format.
