ED summons former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin in money laundering case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned former Indian captain and Congress politician Mohammad Azharuddin for questioning in a money laundering case related to alleged financial irregularities in the Hyderabad Cricket Association, official sources said on Thursday (October 3, 2024).
The 61-year-old former MP was asked to resign before the federal agency at his office here on October 3 and have his statement recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), the sources said.
However, the former cricketer has sought more time with the agency. The investigation is related to alleged financial irregularities at the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA), where the ED had conducted searches in November last year.
Azharuddin's role during his tenure as HCA president is under the agency's scanner, the sources said.
There was no immediate response from him. The money laundering case stems from three FIRs and charge sheets filed by the Telangana Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for alleged criminal misappropriation of HCA funds to the tune of Rs 20 crore.
The charge sheets contain allegations of serious irregularities in the procurement of DG sets, fire fighting systems and canopies for the Rajiv Gandhi Cricket Stadium built in Uppal, Hyderabad, the ED had earlier said in a statement.
According to police charge sheets, several works were excessively delayed despite deadlines, leading to rising costs and budget improvements and corresponding losses for the HCA.
It was found that the office bearers of the HCA, including the then Secretary, President and Vice President and others, in connivance with private parties, were arbitrarily awarded various tenders and works to preferred suppliers/contractors at higher than market rates without proper rules to follow. tender processes and in many cases even before receipt of tenders, the agency claimed.
Advances were paid to many contractors but no work was executed by them, it added.
The ED had said that last year's raids had led to the seizure of digital devices, incriminating documents and unaccounted cash worth Rs 10.39 lakh.
