Boris Johnson claims he found spy device after Netanyahu meeting
Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson claimed in his book Unchained that he discovered a listening device, used to listen to private conversations, in his personal bathroom at the Foreign Ministry after meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in 2017.
Johnson claimed his security team found the device after Netanyahu used the restroom.
“…It may or may not be a coincidence, but I was told that later, when they were doing a regular bug search, they found a listening device in the thunder box (a slang term for bathroom),” Johnson wrote in his book.
When asked by the Telegraph for more details, Johnson replied: “I think everything you need to know about this episode is in the book. »
The Prime Minister's office has yet to respond to Johnson's claims.
Israeli spyware and accusations
Israel was accused of installing listening devices around the same time at the White House, the Telegraph reported.
Israel has also been accused of spying at the ICC for decades, according to accusations made by anonymous officials to the Guardian in May.
According to the report, Israeli intelligence intercepted the phone calls. Messages, emails and documents from ICC officials, including Attorney General Karim Khan and his predecessor Fatou Bensouda. This information would have provided Benjamin Netanyahu with advanced knowledge of the ICC's plans.
In 2022, Johnson was reportedly informed that his office at 10 Downing Street had been targeted by “several” suspected infections using Pegasus, Israeli spyware that turns a phone into a remote listening device, according to the Guardian.
Although Pegasus is Israeli software, the Guardian cited a report claiming that the United Arab Emirates was behind the incidents.
In a statement from Citizen Lab, the report's authors said: “We confirm that in 2020 and 2021 we observed and informed the UK government of several suspected cases of Pegasus spyware infections within official British networks. These include: The Prime Minister's Office (10 Downing Street) [and] the Foreign and Commonwealth Office…
“Suspected FCO infections were associated with Pegasus operators we link to the UAE, India, Cyprus and Jordan. The suspected infection in the UK Prime Minister's office was associated with a Pegasus operator that we associate with the United Arab Emirates.”
