Kentucky hockey looks to freshmen for key contributions early in 2024 campaign – Kentucky Kernel

Kentucky hockey is off to a 4-1-1 start as it looks to repeat last season's success and go even further with eyes on the national championship.

To get to that point, however, the team will need key contributions from some new faces.

Of the 38 players on the roster, 20 are in their rookie season, 10 of which have played in at least three games so far.

This trial by fire has yielded good results, as of Kentucky's 22 goals, six have come by the freshmen, as have 15 of the team's 50 points.

Center Ty Patefield has become a crucial part of the team's offense as he ranks second on the team in total points and leads the rookies in goals with three, while forwards Macklin Yelle and Alex Clingerman have each contributed one and two goals respectively .

Even those who don't have much of an offensive footprint so far are finding their feet within the Wildcats' physical and staunch defense, which has allowed just eight total goals.

As a team, the Wildcats have given up just 1.3 goals per game and some key defensive contributions have come from rookie defensemen Cole Bartnick, Nick Hahn and Kelly Thompson.

If the team is to achieve its ambitions, the Cats' freshmen will need to continue to capitalize on this opportunity as the season progresses.

Kentucky has had a good start to the season, winning four of its first six games and sitting in first place in the conference's second division, but the majority of its games have been played at home.

The team and the freshmen in particular will be tested again, as three of the next four games are scheduled.

The Wildcats face Miami (OH) on Friday, October 4 at the Lexington Ice Center before heading out on a three-game road trip.
