Laura Kuenssberg has explained more about why a planned BBC interview with Boris Johnson couldn't go ahead – and revealed the 'good side' after saying she accidentally sent the former prime minister her briefing notes.

In her weekly news bulletin, Kuenssberg, who presents the channel's Sunday political show, addressed her recent “embarrassing mistake”saying it was sad and frustrating that the conversation sitting with Mr Johnson – whom she calls “one of the most influential politicians of our time” – could not perform.

She said that when preparing for an interview, she works with a “small group” of producers to determine what the most important topics in the conversation might be, then imagines how an interviewee might respond.

“Doing your homework is vital, even if it's a subject that much is already known about – especially with a politician like Johnson, who doesn't always like answering questions,” Kuenssberg wrote.

She added that she regularly puts away many prepared questions, but would “never, ever tell the politician or any guest” in advance.

“If they knew what they were facing, they could prepare all their answers, and it would be a completely artificial exercise,” she said.

“We also couldn't have changed our question topics. If I hadn't asked about Brexit, COVID, partygate, his resignation or his relationship to the truth, we simply wouldn't have does our job.

“So, unfortunately and frustratingly, we just couldn’t move forward.”

The BBC interview was to be the first in a media tour allowing the former Prime Minister to publicize his new book, Unleashed, which will be released on October 10.

The channel had been heavily promoted over the past fortnight, but the BBC press team said sharing notes now made the conversation “untenable”.

Finding the “silver lining” in what Kuenssberg called an “embarrassing” mistake on Wednesday, she said others had been in touch to share their own gaffes.

Kuenssberg said in one example: “A former government adviser sent a message to what she thought was her colleague, complaining that the minister she worked for was 'in a good mood.' Except, unfortunately, she sent it to, yes, the real minister. “.

Another example Kuenssberg gave would be that of a former prime minister of another country who accidentally received an email in which he was called a “very bad word.” The parliamentary staffer in question said the prime minister then read the email during family visits.
