Crosses replaced by photos of Xi Jinping in Chinese churches – Matters India

Beijing, October 4, 2024: The Chinese government has ordered the removal of crosses from churches and replaced images of Jesus Christ or the Virgin Mary with images of President Xi Jinping, according to a new report from the US Commission on Religious Freedom international (USCIRF).
The report said the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is targeting Catholic and Protestant Christians in a process known as “Sinicization.” This includes displaying CCP slogans at church entrances, censoring religious texts, imposing CCP-approved religious materials, and instructing clergy to preach CCP ideology.
The report explains that Sinicization “reinforces the CCP's control over all aspects of religious life by forcing groups of the five officially recognized religions to conform their beliefs, activities, expression, dress, leadership, language, their places of worship and much more to the CCP ideology. »
He also notes that China integrates the CCP's ideology into all facets of the religious life of Buddhists, Catholics, Protestant Christians, Muslims and Taoists.
Tens of millions of Christians in China have refused to join state-sanctioned and controlled religious organizations, known as “patriotic religious organizations,” and worship underground. They reject the spiritual authority of government-backed clergy, instead recognizing the Vatican as the only legitimate source of spiritual authority, which the CCP views as a threat.
Anyone practicing religion outside of state-sanctioned associations is considered part of a “cult” and subject to the anti-cult provisions of Chinese law, a policy that has led to mass arrests and imprisonments . The report says the Chinese government continues to “forcibly disappear” underground independent Catholic and Protestant leaders.
In 2018, the Vatican and China signed a cooperation agreement on the appointment of the country's bishops. However, despite this, the Chinese government has unilaterally appointed CCP-aligned bishops, without consultation or approval from the Vatican.
