Police in the Pakistani capital used tear gas during clashes with supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan at an anti-government rally in defiance of a ban on public gatherings in the city on Friday.

Authorities had cordoned off Islamabad and blocked mobile phone services to prevent the rally, with the city remaining on alert ahead of a series of high-level diplomatic events, including a visit by India's foreign minister , S. Jaishankar, for a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. October 15 and 16.

Shipping containers blocked entry points into Islamabad, and large contingents of police and paramilitary troops guarded the areas. Despite this, dozens of Khan's supporters managed to escape the blockades. Some, including the former prime minister's sisters, were arrested by law enforcement, according to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and local media.

“Release Imran!” Free Imran! chanted the protesters, brandishing photos of Khan and PTI flags, less than a kilometer from the city's red zone, which is home to the country's parliament and a walled enclave of foreign embassies.

The rally was the latest in a series of protests since last month, calling for Khan's release and opposing the ruling coalition, which the PTI deems illegitimate, saying it was formed following fraudulent elections.

“It is their right to hold a rally, but this is not the right time and not the right way,” Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters, referring to diplomatic events in the capital.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim visited Islamabad on Thursday and Friday, as the city also prepares to host a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) a week later. The event will see the participation of Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, marking the first visit by an Indian Foreign Minister to Pakistan in almost a decade, amid strained relations between the two rival nations.

Naqvi noted that a Saudi delegation and Chinese Premier Li Qiang would arrive in Islamabad before the conference. The government has called in the army to provide security in the capital from Saturday in anticipation of the events, according to Geo News.

Naqvi also urged Khan's supporters to postpone their protest until after the SCO conference. However, Khan asked his supporters to gather outside Parliament, regardless of the obstacles. “This war has entered a decisive phase,” he posted on X.

A convoy of Khan's supporters heading towards the capital from the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also clashed with police, who deployed tear gas to disperse them, according to Geo News.

Despite being imprisoned since August 2023, candidates backed by Khan secured the largest number of seats in February's elections, although their numbers fell short of forming a government. His opponents, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, formed a coalition government.

Schools were closed in Islamabad and the neighboring garrison town of Rawalpindi, where mobile phone services were also suspended.
