Rainbow Wahine opens the beach tennis fall tournament
LONG BEACH, California–Six members of the University of Hawaii women's tennis team kicked off the opening day of the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament at Long Beach State's Rhodes Tennis Center. NewcomersMakeilah Nepomuceno And Peppi Ramstedt won both matches on Thursday to advance to the main draw round of 32 on Friday. Nepomuceno and doubles partner Hanna Galindo paired to win their round of 32 doubles match to also advance to the next round.
Neponuceno did not disappoint in her collegiate debut for the Rainbow Wahine. The day started with Nepomuceno and Galindo earning UH's only doubles victory of the day as they handily defeated UC Irvine's Asha Gidwani and Nour Khayat 8-4. UHs Joelle Lanz And Allaire Berl Sein Myong and Mariia Nikitash of Cal State Fullerton pushed to their limits, with only one break in the pro set, 8-6. CSUN's Yliia Zhytelma and Angela Ho pulled away from UH's duo of Ramstedt and Emma Forgnac 8-1.
With the win, Nepomuceno and Galindo advance to the Round of 16 on Friday, where they will face Cal Poly's Eliza Bates and Jessica MacCallum at 6 a.m.
In singles, Nepomucen dominated in the Round of 128, defeating UC San Diego's Adrina Tabares in straight sets 6-1, 6-2. She followed by beating UC Irvine's Isabella Pitchford 6-2, 6-2 to advance to Friday's Round of 32.
Ramstedt, a senior transfer from Long Beach State, made a successful return to the Rhodes Tennis Center by also winning her two matches on Thursday. First, Ramstedt held off Maya Youseff of UC Davis in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5. She then defeated Cal Poly's Kennedy Buntrock by just one break in both sets as she prevailed with a 6-4, 6-4 win to advance to Friday's main draw.
UH's Galindo fought hard but fell to UCSB's Lily Pradkin in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
In Friday's Singles Main Draw Round of 32, Nepomuceno will face UCSB's Tyra Richardon and Ramstedt will face Cal State Fullerton's Myon. The first service is scheduled for 7:15 a.m. Ht.
