Chinese researcher expelled from America, Xi Jinping furious
Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Joe Biden's government continues to take actions to block technology from China. More recently, the United States has targeted Chinese biotechnology companies operating in its country.
As a result, Wuxi AppTec and WuXi Biologics, which make research and development (R&D) companies for the pharmaceutical industry, are reportedly considering selling their U.S. operations.
According to sources familiar with the matter, WuXi AppTech will be forced to sell its gene and cell therapy manufacturing unit, WuXi Advanced Therapies.
The manufacturing unit operates 4 laboratories and manufacturing facilities in Philadelphia, cited by Reuters, Friday (04/10/2024), based on a Financial Times report.
Meanwhile, WuXi Biologics, which is more focused on providing global biologics services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, is in talks with experts to test interest in some of its production facilities in Europe, the FT said .
WuXi AppTec and WuXi Biologics did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill last month to limit activities with WuXi AppTec and several other Chinese biotechnology companies. The reason is that these companies fear threatening national security.
The bill passed by a vote of 306 to 81, exceeding the required two-thirds majority. After that, the bill must be approved by the US Senate before it can be submitted to President Joe Biden for signing into law (UU).
Xi Jinping's government immediately responded to the latest US efforts to thwart Chinese companies. China's Foreign Ministry called the bill “discriminatory” and said the United States should stop making “excuses” to crack down on Chinese companies.
