JAKARTA (Reuters) Outgoing Indonesian President Joko Widodos' approval rating has fallen to its lowest level this year after a decision by his allies to change election rules, a poll showed on Friday, although he remains more popular that during most of his 10-year presidency. .
The survey of 1,200 people conducted late last month by Indikator Politik Indonesia showed the president's approval dropped 7 percentage points to 75 percent, down from a record high of 82 percent during of its July poll.
Jokowi, as the president is known, had an average rating of 66 percent in his first term and 71 percent in his second term, according to Burhanuddin Muhtadi, chief researcher at Indikators. His rating was 79% and 80% in the January and February polls, respectively.
Burhanuddin attributed the drop to public discontent following a failed attempt in August by lawmakers allied with Jokowi to change the minimum age requirement for regional elections, which would have allowed his youngest son to run for office. deputy governor of the province.
Lawmakers scrapped the plan after fierce protests in several cities, during which demonstrators stormed the gates of the national parliament before being pushed back by riot police using water cannons.
On October 20, Jokowi will give way to his former rival and current Defense Minister, Prabowo Subianto, to take over the presidency after his victory in the February elections, thanks to Jokowi's tacit support.
Jokowi served the maximum two terms allowed and his implicit support for Prabowo was widely seen as a move to maintain his influence and preserve his legacy.
It is unclear what future role, if any, Jokowi might play.
His overall rating remains high because a majority of Indonesians still perceive economic conditions under his administration as relatively good, Burhanuddin added, including his handling of inflation.
His government also offered many incentives to the public, he added.
Burhanuddin said that although there was dissatisfaction with the state of democracy in the country, a majority of Indonesians understood democracy in a simple way.
As long as economic conditions are good, people will be happy with the president, he said.
