Mother opens up about heartbreak to raise awareness about meningitis
Meningitis affects as many as 3,000 people each year.
Hundreds of people die each year. These numbers may not seem that high, but the fact remains that people are dying from this bacterial infection.
There are actually preventative vaccines, and parents want to have them available before their daughter gets sick.
“My daughter Emily was 19 years old,” Alicia Stillman said.
It was February 2013. Emily was a sophomore in college.
“She called home one night just complaining of a headache,” Stillman recalled.
It turned out that Emily had type B meningitis.
“Within 25 hours, Emily was dead,” Stillman said.
“Unfortunately, we don't hear much about meningitis. Fortunately, meningitis is a relatively rare disease, but not uncommon in your child,” Mary Beth Koslup Petraco The doctor spoke on behalf of the association. American Meningitis Prevention Association.
The organization was founded by Emily's mother, Alicia Stillman, along with Patti Ukowitz, another mother who lost her daughter Kim.
“When I said goodbye to my daughter, who had tubes coming out of every part of her body, on a cold morning in February, I promised her that I would find out what happened,” Stillman said.
It will be another year before a meningitis B vaccine is available.
There are now vaccines that cover all five strains of meningitis.
The CDC recommends meningococcal vaccination for all teens and young adults.
“We're educating parents, we're educating universities, we're educating health care providers, we're educating students themselves,” Stillman said.
“No one survives bacterial meningitis unscathed. Even if they do, they most often lose limbs and can develop mental and cognitive problems, hearing loss, and vision loss.”・Dr. Petraco said.
“So now I want to encourage parents, patients, adolescents, and young adults to take responsibility for themselves and provide health care with the knowledge, 'Am I protected from all five serogroups of this terrible disease?' “I strongly encourage you to go to your doctor's office,'' Stillman said.
Stillman said her daughter always wanted to be on Saturday Night Live and loved doing stand-up comedy.
Now, she says she will always wish the same thing had happened to her.
She doesn't want other parents to go through that, even though there are ways to prevent it.
