Boris Johnson shut down ITV's Tom Bradby as the pair clashed over Brexit in a heated interview.
The former prime minister defended Brexit and rejected criticism of its economic impact.
Bradby stressed that many of the trade deals the UK struck after Brexit were simply a continuation of existing deals with the European Union, adding that key agreements with the United States, China and India were still pending.
Johnson responded by saying a deal with India “was in the works” and that a deal with America depended on the next US election.
Faced with immigration figures showing a sharp increase since Brexit, Johnson rejected the idea that Brexit had failed.
He insisted leaving the EU had “saved many millions of lives” during the Covid pandemic and allowed the UK to act in its own interests.
This is despite Bradby pointing out that only nine per cent of those surveyed think Brexit was a success.
Johnson said: “The India deal is on track. The deal with America depends to a large extent on the US presidential election.
“If you look at the UK's economic performance since 2016, it compares very favorably to other countries that are still part of the EU and the main thing about Brexit is to enjoy those freedoms. is why believing in Britain means doing things.” differently.”
Bradby was quick to respond, saying: “I understand all these arguments, but the reality is… you're talking about immigration – 330,000 people came to this country in 2015, but by 2023 there were 685,000 !

The interview took place less than a week before Johnson's new memoir. Unchained comes out October 10.
The former prime minister makes several eyebrow-raising claims in his book. One claims that David Cameron promised Johnson “any job he wanted” if he pledged to support the Remain campaign in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
