US warships, planes strike a dozen Houthi targets in Yemen
The U.S. military struck more than a dozen Houthi targets in Yemen on Friday using both aircraft and warships, U.S. officials told CBS News.
The strikes, according to a statement from the US Central Command, hit 15 targets containing Houthi offensive military capabilities, and the strikes were aimed at “protecting freedom of navigation and making international waters safer and more secure for US ships, of the coalition and merchants.
The Houthis last week launched what the Pentagon called a “complex attack” using cruise missiles and drones near U.S. Navy ships. Weapons launched by the Houthis were either shot down by Navy ships or washed ashore, according to the Pentagon.
None of the US ships were hit, and no US personnel were injured, but the attack further demonstrated that months of US airstrikes have not deterred the Houthis from their campaign targeting the ships. in the Red Sea.
Since last November, the Houthis have targeted more than 100 ships, sinking two and hijacking another. The group says it is launching the attacks to protest Israel's war in Gaza, but U.S. officials say many of the targeted ships have no connection to the Israeli war.
Recently, the Houthis directly attacked Israel, launching a drone on Tel Aviv in July and a missile in September. Both attacks prompted an Israeli response targeting sites in Yemen.
US Central Command forces regularly launch strikes against Houthi missile or drone launchers when there are indications that the Houthis plan to attack US military or commercial vessels, but Friday's strikes targeted infrastructure more Houthis.
Earlier this year, the United States and the United Kingdom carried out several rounds of joint airstrikes targeting not only launchers but also infrastructure, such as storage facilities. “They still have a robust arsenal, but we have been able to degrade their capabilities over time,” Singh said.
The Houthis, like Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, are supported by Iran and have received weapons from it.
