Increased monitoring at Mount Adams after significant spike in earthquake activity

The US Geological Survey says more earthquakes than usual were detected in September — six in one month. Typically, one site is selected every two to three years.

MOUNT ADAMS, Wash. — The U.S. Geological Survey says it identified six earthquakes on Mount Adams in September — the largest number in a month since monitoring began in 1982. “There is no indication that the level of seismic activity is a cause for concern,” the agency says. Further monitoring will help geologists understand the full extent of activity at the site.

Mount Adams is located about 50 miles from Yakima and 30 miles north of the White Salmon Hood River area. A 2018 threat assessment detailing the risks associated with volcanic activity classified Mount Adams as a “substantial threat” due to its potential impacts; Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier are classified as a “very high threat.”

The USGS says the biggest threats to people living near Mount Adams are volcanic collapses, which can occur during eruptive or non-eruptive periods. About 300 years ago, volcanic avalanches flowed all the way into and past the Trout Lake area, and much smaller landslide-triggered avalanches occurred in the 20th century but did not travel very far.

Harold Tobin is a seismologist and professor at the University of Washington and director of the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network. When volcanoes are active in any way, whether magma is moving or hot water and rock are interacting to cause fractures, he says, they produce small earthquakes — most of them too small for anyone to feel. Seismographs on the volcano act as stethoscopes that can listen to the cracks and roars it produces.

“Of course, they can produce it without causing an eruption. They do it all the time. All of our cascade volcanoes have some level of seismic activity,” Tobin said. “But there are changes in this activity that we can monitor, they are actually signs of a possible transition to an eruption. We are not there yet, and we are not with Mount Adams but we have seen changes.”

Tobin hopes more monitoring will help geologists understand the true scope of activity on Mount Adams. Previously, only one monitoring station had been installed at the Mount Adams site. The new stations will be under temporary permits from the US Forest Service.

“Although there is only one monitoring station enough to detect earthquakes down to the magma level, down to one magnitude, this is less than anyone would feel — it is only recorded by the instruments,” Tobin said. “One station allows us to know if it is active. We need two, three or more stations to do an accurate analysis of the sites.”
