Massillon vs Football North, OHSAA high school football score updates
MASSILLON As the final seconds ticked off the clock at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium, a flurry of fireworks lit up the sky behind the end zone. It was the perfect metaphor for the way the Massillon offense lit up the scoreboard in an impressive 45-6 victory over a Clarkson North team full of Division I college prospects from across the country of Canada.
Quarterback Jalen Slaughter showed off his golden arm in the win for Massillon. Slaughter was 8 of 12 passing for 205 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the win.
“Jalen had a great night throwing the ball,” Massillon head coach Nate Moore said. “I felt like the offensive line protected him well and gave him time to throw and he took advantage of that.”
Slaughter threw two TD passes to Deontay Malone and one to Jacques Carter. Slaughter showed a great touch on the 73-yard strike to Carter on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, resulting in a running clock for the Tigers.
“We played Massillon Tiger Football tonight,” Slaughter said. “We stayed focused all week and didn't listen to a lot of outside noise. We focused on playing team ball and were able to come out and get the win. It was a team win for us.”
Massillon also had a successful night running the ball, despite facing a Clarkson offensive line where the average player stood 6-foot-4 and weighed more than 300 pounds. Mylen Lenix scored on a run of 64 yards, totaling 80 yards on just two carries, Ja'Meir Gamble carried eight times for 66 yards and Michael Wright Jr. ran for a touchdown and 24 yards on four carries.
“We're used to seeing teams with a lot of size along the offensive line,” Moore said. “It seems like every team we've seen for most of the year has been big up front.”
Massillon's defense also produced some fireworks of its own. The Tigers held Clarkson North to a season-high six points in the win. Clarkson North had not scored fewer than 20 points in any game this season.
Linebacker Ja'dyn Williams was the star for the Tiger defense. Williams had nine tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks and a forced fumble. He almost had a third sack, but quarterback Jacob Mueller threw the ball just short of the line of scrimmage for an intentional grounding call.
“We've had two losses, so we went into this game with a little tap on the back,” Williams said. “My approach this week was to just stay focused and keep working hard.”
Williams is the leading tackler for Massillon this season with 65 tackles. That now includes 4.5 sacks and two forced fumbles.
“He checks a lot of boxes,” Moore said. “He's a junior captain. That's not easy to achieve on a team like this. He's a great student, a great kid and a great teammate. He comes in and works hard for us every day.”
