Moravia's two new pickleball courts were completed last week and are now ready for use. Members of the Moravia Community Betterment Committee are putting the finishing touches on this latest addition to Trussell Park and invite everyone to come along and try one of the fastest growing sports in the country.
Two more courts will be added sometime next year. The pickleball venues are open 24/7 and have lighting to allow for night games. Equipment for the game is available wherever sporting goods are sold.
The game was invented in Washington state in the mid-1960s and was popular in the Northwestern US for many years before gradually gaining popularity across the country. It is played with rackets or paddles and a whiffle-style ball. It can be played with two people or as a doubles game with four participants, two per team. With a net separating the court, it resembles the features of tennis and table tennis, but has rules unique to this sport. It is billed as a game that anyone can play, from young children to seniors.
Some of the first players to use the bright blue new courts were a couple from Altoona, IA, who drove through town, saw the courts and stopped to enjoy a few games. Hopefully, as word spreads, the pickleball facilities will see a lot of use, and Moravians will enjoy this newest addition to the park.
