In a side room, backstage at a campaign rally Friday in Flint, Michigan, Arab-American advocates called on Vice President Kamala Harris to break with President Joe Biden's Israel policies and do more efforts to end the war in Gaza.

The conversation, scheduled to last 10 minutes, ended up lasting 20 minutes, according to Wael Alzayat, CEO of Emgage Action, a group aimed at strengthening the American Muslim vote. Harris made no promises, he said, but told them she also wanted the war to end and would do everything she could to work toward that end.

She's committed to working with our community, to including our community and (said) she completely understands what we're saying. She hopes that if she wins, she will be able to achieve all of this once she is president, Alzayat told CNN.

The Emgage Action leader said he and other Arab American leaders in the room had been contacted and invited over the previous 48 hours. Their message to Harris was simple, he said. She needed to distance the way she would govern on this issue from current administration policies, which we do not agree with.

Additional context: The meeting took place amid growing frustration with Harris' response to recent Israeli escalations in Lebanon and concerns that her campaign was unwilling to hear critical voices.
