Islamabad confined after clashes between Imran Khan supporters and police and internet shutdown

The Pakistani capital was sealed off on Saturday, invaded by security forces, with mobile internet cut off as supporters of jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan tried to take over the streets in protest.

Sidelined by dozens of lawsuits, Khan was unable to run in February elections that were marred by allegations of fraud.

But his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has defied the crackdown to urge the government to hold regular protests.

PTI activists began marching into Islamabad on Friday from its power base in the country's northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but faced roadblocks of shipping containers and volleys of tear gas .

On Saturday, small, scattered convoys rushed to Islamabad, in defiance of the government, which approved the deployment of troops on the streets, citing the need to guarantee security ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit which is scheduled to open October 15.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi later told local media that more than 550 people had been arrested.

Protests were also planned for Saturday in Lahore, but the main highway linking the eastern megacity to the capital was blocked.

“I am so proud of all our people,” Khan said in a message posted to the social networking site X on Saturday afternoon. “You showed unwavering resilience and courage by coming out yesterday and overcoming incredible obstacles.”

Amnesty International said communications blackouts and roadblocks “undermine people's rights to freedom of expression, access to information, peaceful assembly and movement.”

“These restrictions are part of a worrying crackdown on the right to protest in Pakistan,” the rights group said.

Khan, 72, served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, when he was ousted in a parliamentary vote of no confidence after falling out with the powerful military seen as Pakistan's political kingmaker.

As opposition leader, he led an unprecedented campaign of defiance before becoming embroiled in a slew of trials that he says were orchestrated to prevent his return to power.
