Rainbow Wahine advances to the quarter-finals of the beach tennis tournament in doubles
LONG BEACH, CA/HONOLULU–The University of Hawaii women's tennis team split this week to compete in the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament and host the UH 'Anuenue Invitational. In Long Beach, UH's duo is doubling down Makeilah Nepomuceno And Hanna Galindo advanced to the quarterfinals of the Beach Tennis Fall Tournament after defeating their Cal Poly opponents Friday at the Rhodes Tennis Center.
Nepomuceno and Galindo defeated the Mustangs' Eliza Bates and Jessica MacCallum with just one break 8-6 to win the pro set and advance to Saturday's quarterfinals, where they will face Peyton Dunkle and Amy at 6:00 HT Leather from Cal Poly.
In the main singles draw, UH's Peppi Ramstedt dropped a three-set heartbreaker, including two tiebreak set losses. She fell to Sein Myong of Cal State Fullerton, 7-6 (5), 2-6, 7-6 (5). Mepomuceno fell in her match against Tyra Richardson of UC Santa Barbara in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
In singles consolation matches, the Rainbow Wahine won two of the four singles matches. UHs Joelle Lanz Athena Wardy of UC San Diego rolled over 6-3, 6-0 andEmma Forgac defeated UCSB's Lucy Lu by retirement. Galindo won the first set, but fell in a tight super tie-breaker to Cal State Fullerton's Kaytlin Taylor 5-7, 6-2, 11-9.
In doubles consolation action, UH's Ramstedt and Forga edged past UC Irvine's Mikaela Hinton and Haily Huynh, 6-2.
At home, only one doubles match and two singles matches were scheduled for the opening day of the UH 'Anuenue Invitational. UH's senior doubles team Sheena Masuda and newest freshmenJazzlyn Miyamura Hawai'i Pacific's Annika Hakovirta and Sayda Hernandez held a break to win 6-4.
In singles, Miyamura cruised past HPU's Lynn Kader 6-1, 6-2. Masuda Jayanne Palma, while UH's Masuda came back in the third set super tie-breaker to defeat Jayanne Palma 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (7).
