China, North Korea mark 75th anniversary of ties with vows of cooperation
SEOUL — The leaders of China and North Korea on Sunday exchanged vows for enhanced bilateral cooperation to mark the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries, the official KCNA news agency reported .
“I attach great importance to the development of China-DPRK relations and have jointly led and promoted the in-depth development of China-DPRK relations while maintaining close communications with you, Comrade Secretary-General, through several meetings and letters and personal messages in recent years,” Chinese President Xi Jinping said in his message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Sunday.
DPRK is short for Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea.
He said China stands ready to continue “writing a new chapter” in its relations through enhanced communications and cooperation.
China is by far North Korea's largest trading partner, and the two share a history dating back to Beijing's support for Pyongyang during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953.
But this year, China reacted cautiously as Kim deepened ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This year, North Korea and Russia signed a strategic treaty that included elements of mutual defense.
Kim also pledged to “relentlessly strive to consolidate and develop the friendly and cooperative relations between the DPRK and China, as required by the new era,” in his message to Xi Jinping on Sunday.
At the same time, Kim supervised live artillery firing by graduates of the O Jin U Artillery Academy on the eve of their ascension to head the main branch of the country's armed forces, it was reported on Sunday the KCNA. The installation forms the backbone of the country's artillery force.
On Friday, Kim said the country would not hesitate to use all available offensive forces, including nuclear weapons, if the enemy tried to use force to encroach on its sovereignty.
