Manika and Sreeja will lead the Indian challenge
Star Indian paddlers such as Manika Batra and Sharath Kamal will be looking to win continental titles at the Asian Table Tennis Championships to be held in Astana, Kazakhstan from October 7 to 13.
The Table Tennis Federation of India (TTFI) has sent a team of 10 members – five men and an equal number of women – for seven events at these championships: men's team, women's team, men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.
The competition starts with the team competition in the first three days, followed by the individual events from October 9.
Medal chances
Top Indian singles players Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra will look to continue their good form this year and earn their first ever medals at the Asian Championships. However, they will face stiff competition from Chinese, Japanese and Korean rowers.
Meanwhile, Indian men's doubles pairings Manush Shah and Manav Thakkar, and G Sathiyan and Harmaeet Desai will be looking for podium finishes after missing out on medals last year.
However, India's real medal chances lie in the men's and women's team categories. The Indian men's team is the two-time bronze medalist.
The Indian men's team, seeded fourth in the tournament, will be among the favorites to win a medal, while the Indian women's team is seeded sixth.
This will be the first time that India will participate in a team event after their historic runs at the Paris Olympics and the country will look to repeat the feat and win a few medals.
